Canton Lake Ranger Earns top Award for Interpretive Excellence

by Brannen Parrish

It’s difficult to forget Park Ranger Shawna Polen. The Canton Lake park ranger is known by coworkers and visitors to the project for her enthusiasm and friendly disposition.

Polen was recently named the 2018 Chief of Engineers Natural Resources Management Hiram M. Chittenden Award for Interpretive Excellence by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Chittenden Award is a national-level award for outstanding contributions in interpretation and environmental education. It’s based on the demonstration of creativity and originality to produce a positive visitor experience at Corps of Engineers projects.

A notable example of Ranger Polen’s efforts includes the development of a Junior Park Ranger App for kids, which she’s continues to work on with the Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Innovations Team.

Congratulations, Ranger Polen!

Working and learning at Lewisville Lake this summer

Two Student Conservation Association interns are working with the  Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lewisville Lake in Texas this summer.

The interns primary focus is to assist Lewisville park rangers by conducting courtesy water safety checks at boat ramps, manning life jacket loaner stations, and conducting water safety presentations. They also assist with other routine daily tasks around the lake.

Last week they helped Lewsiville rangers with routine maintenance on one of the wildlife blinds used during Corps of Engineers’ Veteran Hunts. In this picture (from left to right) Park Ranger Jennifer Lawson, SCA Intern Angela Spain, Park Ranger Joshua Houghtaling, and SCA Intern Kristina Hellinghausen are putting a fresh coat of paint on the blind.
